From a Barbeque to the world’s largest food factory : Story of McDonald’s

Ray Kroc

If the guy shown in the photo had not existed, you would not have been able to eat your favorite burger at the nearest McDonald's joint. Ray Kroc made McDonalds Corporation what it is today, world's largest chain of hamburger fast food restaurants. He uplifted McDonalds from a restaurant into an empire.

Ray Kroc was a born entrepreneur. While still in grammar school, the would-be fast-food king started a lemonade stand in front of his home in Chicago and he spent a summer behind the soda fountain in his uncle's grocery store. Through these early experiences, Kroc began to view the world as one big place to sell to.

When McDonald's was just a small restaurant, run by the founders Richard and Maurice McDonald, Kroc visited and had seen nothing like it. It was a small, indoor self-service restaurant (as opposed to the drive-in restaurants of the time) with a limited menu. But the key part of it was that the burgers were made using conveyer belt in an assembly line fashion which enabled any order to be ready in less than a minute! Ray saw a lot of potential in it. But he was frustrated by the fact that the founders couldn't see that potential. They refused to form it into a company. With a strong vision in mind, Kroc bought the restaurant for $2.7 million. That is when McDONALDS CORPORATION came into existence. And the rest is history!
