When Talent Meets Hardwork: The Inspiring Story of Domino’s

Thomas Monaghan

Do you like pizza of Domino's?
Ever wondered how this chain was founded?

Thomas Monaghan also was known as ‘Tom Monaghan’ was the one who founded this successful chain. But his journey was not so elementary. His father expired when he was 4. As a result of this tragedy, his mother had to face a lot of difficulties in raising him alone. As it got harder for things to work out, the mother decided to send him to an orphanage. There he was inspired by the nuns to become a priest but soon he was expelled due to series of disciplinary infringement.

Later he enrolled in a university to become an architect. However, bearing expenses was never easy. Thomas and his brother decided to take a calculative shot in the dark to earn some bucks. They borrowed $900 to purchase a small pizza store named DomiNick’s. This business didn’t run as expected and he never got a chance to go back to architecture. Now, the only source of bread and butter was that pizza place and the brothers decided to work full time on it. Later the name was changed to Domino’s Pizza. After opening further 3 stores, Tom traded his brother Volkswagen beetle for half of his share in the business.

He did an unusual thing while running his business which was paying attention to the delivery to college campuses. Also, he invented an extraordinary pizza box which was unlike any other chipboard and could contain the pizza without disturbing its toppings and maintaining the temperature of the same. This became a hit and he started spreading his stuff to other town’s colleges with a tightly laced franchise system. The future saw 3 Domino’s franchise opening every day.

"Bankruptcy would have been easier. It wasn't in my vocabulary" - Tom Monaghan
