From A Poor Carpenter To Pride Of Japan : Story Of Kiichiro Toyoda (Founder, Toyota)

Kiichiro Toyoda

This Japanese company is well regarded as one of the biggest companies to have taken birth. It is arguably the largest producer of automobiles in the world. Considering market capital, it stands top of all Japanese companies. Evaluating by revenue, this company is ranked 14th richest globally. It is the first company and one of the very few to produce more than 10 million vehicles per year. And, the company is so influential and impactful that giving in to its grandeur, the name of the city where this company was started changed its name to the name of the company.

TOYOTA, is the one in discussion here.

Toyota Motor Corporation was founded by a gentleman named Kiichiro Toyoda. He was born to Sakichi Toyoda, a folklore legend himself. Sakichi Toyoda was the son of a poor carpenter and went on to become the father of Japanese Industrial Revolution. He invented the automatic power loom machine and built a successful company around it. However, his son Kiichiro didn’t find the family loom business amusing enough. His calling lied towards the growing market of automobile which was ruled by Ford and Benz. He didn’t take much time to realize that future of this worlds lies on wheelers and his servility to confine his dreams got him his father’s support.

Kiichiro Toyoda travelled for months to acquire knowledge of gasoline engine and its production.Soon he left the loom work business of his father and started the company Toyota Motors with an inline-6 engine. His product did sell nicely and shifted to producing trucks. Toyota faced dismal time and reached the verge of bankruptcy during WW2. However,  Kiichiro’s recurrent efforts to reach common men paid off when his company was successful in producing commercial vehicles post world war and again stood on its feet. Unfortunately, Kiichiro didn’t live long enough to witness the unprecedented success his company garnered.

Interestingly, Toyota being world renowned for its cars, never felt like leaving its roots. It still operates in automatic looms and is a major manufacturer and seller of electrical sewing machines.
